In our Wednesday morning gospel from Mark chapter 10, On the road to Jerusalem, James and John ask Jesus for the best seats in glory. Jesus does not scold them. He just shows them where greatness actually lives. It is in the chalice. It is in the serving. It is in the small unseen yes that nobody will thank us for. And He has already gone ahead of us into all of it.

Then we walk with Saint Augustine of Canterbury, the Apostle of England. A monk who got scared and turned back before he became one of the great missionaries of the Church. A saint who failed at part of his work, leaned on his friend Gregory a little too often, and just kept showing up. Eight years of faithful labor that bore a harvest he would never see.
